MEDIA RELEASE 8-BALL RUMBLE SINGLES TITLES DECLARED Titles were declared in five divisions during the Singles event at the 4th Annual 8-Ball Rumble on the weekend. Women’s Competitive Singles: Diane Boudreault of Sudbury flew through this division winning 4 games against opponents Helen Goulet of North Bay, Katie Willbond of Ottawa, Cindy Laplante and Wendy Stone of North Bay and then faced Karen Faubert, also from North Bay in the final. Faubert put up strong fight, losing the first set to Boudreault by a score of 2 games to 1. Faubert’s road to the final saw her lose her opening match to Julie Ostle of Oshawa. She then went on to defeat Anne Sinclair of Oshawa, Katie Willbond and Connie Fedorak of Ottawa. In the quarterfinal she defeated fellow North Bay player, Wendy Stone. Women’s Recreational Singles: Charlotte Young of Ottawa played 4 games defeating Dana Girard of Sudbury, Dolly Tucker and Raz Stratton of Ottawa before losing to Natalie Coatrannec of Ottawa. To get to the final, Coatrannec won 3 straight matches against Cheryl McKee and Fran Raby, then defeated Young, sending her to the loser’s side of the bracket. Young had to defeat Coatrannec in two sets to claim the title in the final. Tucker from Sudbury placed third. Mixed Recreational Singles: Paul Harding of North Bay captured was crowned the champion after opening the tournament with a win over fellow North Bayites, Darrell Doherty and Barry Nelles and Mark Vallieres. In the final her defeated Kevin Skanes of Sault Ste. Marie easily, winning the first set 2 games to 0. Skanes road to the final saw him lose his opening match to Claude Deschatelets of North Bay, then went on to beat Bill Creary of Sudbury, Nelles and Doherty of North Bay. The quarterfinals saw Skanes defeat 3rd place finisher, Marc Vallieres. Men’s Competitive Singles: Dave Skov of Ottawa played and won 6 matches without a loss. On his way to the final he defeated North Bay’s Leo Mongeon and Mike Carrier, then beat Rick Emery of Ottawa, Rob Barr and Bruce Hickey of North Bay. Second place finisher, Jeff Wabano of North Bay, won his first 2 games over Roger Generoux of Sudbury and Derek Bedard of Toronto, then lost to Pat Moulton of Ottawa. Jeff battled back to win his next 5 games to qualify for the finals against Dave Skov. The championship final saw Skov easily defeat Wabano in the first set. Finishing 3rd was Bruce Hickey of North Bay. Mixed Intermediate Singles: This tightly contested divison’s title was Rodney Lavalle from Sudbury. He opened the tournament with wins over Kevin Gravelle of North Bay, Yves Lafontaine of Sturgeon Falls, Dean Davis and Dan Hnatuck of Sudbury. His opponent in the final was Pat Duvall from Ottawa who had a great tournament with wins over Jan Van Der Henne of Sudbury, Andrew Grandmond of North Bay, Jim McEwan of Sault Ste. Marie, Dave Ohorodnyk of North Bay and Paul Konarek of Sudbury. He then lost to Lavalle, which sent him to the loser’s side of the bracket. Once there, Duvall handed 3rd place finisher Ohorodnyk his second loss. In the final Lavalle only needed the first set to win the championship title. The players were treated to challenge matches and trick shots from Snooker great, Cliff Thorburn. Thorburn was on hand throughout the weekend, which turned out to be a real crowd pleaser. |
