MEDIA RELEASE PARTNERS PLAYERS COME CLOSE The 11TH Annual Ontario V.N.E.A. Provincial Championships took place this past weekend at the Hamilton Convention Centre. Singles results were as follows: MEN’S A DIVISION Gabe Herodier was slow out of the blocks and lost his first match to Don Kari of London. However, Herodier rebounded and won his next four matches defeating Frank Peter of London, Mike Atanasijivic, Steve Tully of Sarnia and Lou Driessen of Windsor. Herodier’s next match was against Andrew Tipman of Ottawa. Tipman prevailed after a hard fought battle, leaving Herodier with a 13th place finish. Serge Ruel started his day by winning is first three matches. He defeated Moe Gagner of Windsor, Ozzie Chaisson from Sudbury and Pete Isaac from Sarnia. His next battle was against Arland White from Sarnia and Ruel suffered his first lost which sent him to the lossers side of the bracket. Unfortunately the door was locked and Ruel lost his next match to Dan Sauve from Ottawa, giving him a 9th, place finish in the Men’s A Division. WOMEN’S B DIVISION Evelyn Turner finished in 5th spot in a division comprising of 63 women. Turner had wins over Raz Straton of Ottawa, Jennifer Kasper of Windsor, Zabrina, Willman of Toronto, Jennifer Tucker of Ottawa and Colleen Sarazin of Windsor. Linda McKenzie of Toronto finally defeated Turner after a hard fought battle. MEN’S B DIVISION John O’Sullivan was in a marathon all day long. He played 8 matches, winning 6. On his road to success, he defeated Paul Illie, Scott Rowse and Chris Foster, all of London. In his next outings he defeated Pat Thompson of North Bay and Jeff Leslie of Ottawa. O’Sullivan was finally ousted from the tournament by Felipe St. Pierre of Windsor. O’Sullivan placed 25th in a field of 200 players. Rob Barr also made a run for it in this division. He won 4 matches against Ivan Starcevic and Bob Bloomfield of London, Donald Caron from Quebec and Doug VanBoymeer of Sarnia. He then faced Jimmy Saad from Windsor and lost sending him to the losers side of the bracket. In his next match, he to Denise Belanger of Toronto, two games to three. Barr placed 17th in this division. MIXED RECREATIONAL DIVISION The Nelles Twins played well in their first ever tournament, Barry Nelles played 4 matches, with a winning two. He defeated Ross DiGiorge ofWindsor and Kim Brewer of Sudbury. He went down to defeat to Glen Shewchuk of Windsor and Angele Sauve of Sudbury, giving him a 4th place finish. Brian Nelles also played 4 matches. He had wins over Angie Ambrus from London and Jackie Shawanda from Sudbury then lost to Brian Gagnac of Windsor and Angele Sauve of Sudbury, finishing up the day in 5th place. Team results were as follows: MENS B DIVISION Sticky Shafts started the Provincials on a winning note defeating Triple D Electric from London. In their next outing, they lost a tough match against Ednas Lunch from Windsor. They went on to win their next 6 matches against CC QBalls from Quebec, Time Out Bar of Windsor, Scotts Team from London, Off the Bank and Armed & Dangerous of Toronto and Barroom Bandits of Ottawa. In the next two matches, Sticky Shafts were defeated by Mayhem Men and Quattro Q, both from Windsor. Sticky Shafts took home 3rd place honors in the Men’s B Division. MEN’S B HARDLUCK DIVISION The Mongsters started the tournament with 1 win & 2 losses which put them into the Hard Luck bracket. They got the 8 ball rolling in their favour and won the next 5 matches defeating Ottawa’s Broken Cue, Rescue Squad and Kiss My Cue from Toronto, Golden Cues of Toronto and Color of Money of Windsor. The finals of the Hard Luck B Division was an all North Bay affair as Mongsters defeated Predators in two two sets to take the championship. The Predators proved they came to play winning nine matches before meeting up with the Mongsters. They started with a win against London’s Short & Kurleys and Chronically Disturbed. They lost to The Stingers of Windsor and Golden Cues from Toronto. After the losses, the team took control of the table winning their next 4 matches against Rez Bombs of London, Run The Table of Sarnia, Golden Cues and Outcast of Toronto. They met The Mongsters in the final match and went down to defeat in two matches. In the same division, North Bay’s Danger Zone won against Whatever from London and Get Racked of Sarnia. After two losses they were eliminated but ended up placing 7th-8th. WOMENS B DIVISION The Gypsy’s lost their first two games against Team to Beat from Sarnia & No XQses of Windsor, sending them to the Sponsors bracket. There they defeated Spiderwomen and French Ticklers, both from Windsor, before losing out to Balls In Hand and French Ticklers again from Windsor in two close matches. Gypsy’s ended up with a third place finish in the Women’s B Sponsor Division. MIXED RECREATION DIVISION The Goonies of North Bay came out firing all cues, winning their first 4 matches. They defeated Hello! and One Too Many from North Bay as well as Rack & Roll and UB6IB9 of Windsor in the round robin event. They then suffered a loss at the hands of S & S Mobile Auto Service of North Bay. In the Semi Finals, they again defeated Hello! In the final, the Goonies lost a real nail biter against UB6IB9 of Windsor, 120-119, giving them a 2nd place finish. |
